Build Your Own Raised Bed Garden
One way to build a cheap raised garden bed is to use recycled materials like old pallets. And, if you have them handy, you could use cinder blocks or old bricks to create your raised bed structure. If you do not already have them, you can often find some available at low cost or even free. After you get your building material, simply arrange them to form the shape you desire for your garden bed then fill it with soil. Or, you can use readily available lumber like 2x4s or 2x6s and cut them to size needed to build a wooden frame. Look for discounted lumber at your local hardware store.
When building a cinder block raised bed, be sure to stack the cinder blocks brick-layed style in order to form the walls of your garden bed, this will ensure a strong structure - but, be sure the blocks are level and stable.
For the pallet raised bed; disassemble old wooden pallets then use the planks to construct a rectangular frame for your garden bed. The basic wooden frame consist of lumber, such as 2x6s or 2x4s, cut to the desired length and fasten together with screws or nails to create a rectangular frame. Personally, I like using proper screws over nails - but it is just my personal preference.
Soil depth and Drainage are Important considerations
For Soil depth, build the depth to at least 12 inches of soil depth within the raised bed for proper plant growth. In order to ensure proper drainage it is good to add a layer of gravel in the bottom of the bed before adding the soil. And, when using some materials, there may be large holes in the side walls. If so, then line the inside of the wall with landscape fabric so that the soil do not wash out of the holes.
