Classic cars

Typically, by definition, a classic car is an older car, usually 20 years or older. The common perception of a classic car is an older car of sufficient historical interest worth preserving or restoring rather than scrapping - to be a collectible.

Modern classic cars are generally older vehicles. They range from 15 to 25 years of age. However, they are usually not accepted as classics according to the Antique Automobile Club of America.

Emission levels

Classic cars do not meet the modern emission levels standards set by the EU and US emission standards. They were built to meet the national car emission levels that were present in the year of production of the vehicle. The emission standards have increased in many countries since then. Therefore, classic cars may not be allowed to enter cities that have special emission restrictions or low emission zones.

Safety

Basic safety features, such as seat belts, crumple zones or rollover protection are usually lacking on Classic cars. However, although they lack such advanced safety features as air bags, antilock braking systems, and other electronic controls, most US-market cars built in 1966 and later do have some basic safety features. These may include things such as padded dashboards, seat belts, dual-circuit braking systems, and safety glass.

Looking to buy a Classic car?

All things considered, the definition of a "classic car" comes down to one's personal opinion and preferences. However, when it comes to specific needs such as insurance or DMV registration, you will have to rely upon the approved definition of classic. Your definition classic might not be in agreement with state agencies and insurers. And, if you should decide to sell your car, other classic car enthusiasts might not agree that it is a classic.
