Gemstones were used in the breastplate of the High Priest of Israel.
We find the story of the breastplate in the book of Exodus as the Breastplate of Aaron. It is, or becomes, a sacred object to be worn by the High Priest of the Israelites. The breastplate becomes associated with how the Priests communicate with Elohim. It contained twelve gemstones and had straps on each corner so that it hang over the shoulders of the Priests, over their sacred garments. These twelve gemstones represented the twelve tribes of Israel.
